Little Patience

As a young girl I had no patience for any tales of the heart. I would run screaming from the room when a woman in Victorian garb was on the screen. I never understood how my mother and sister could excitedly sit on the couch and watch these movies.

Now I know.

19th century dramas have the same themes but is it because it's an era with societal expectations extremely different from ours that attracts us? The feminist inside me enjoys the freedoms I have now: an independent woman in a decent profession who loves wearing pants. But I can't help but think that the Victorian era was so simpler where women knew what was expected of them, of how to act, of what to wear.

The softer emotional side enjoys the idea of courting, of the propriety dance between a couple. Dating today has a chase to the bed not a chase to a simplistic gesture of hand-holding. Where's the romanticism? Where's the gentlemen wooing? Wooing today is screaming post coitus not trying to gain the attention of a woman.

This could only just be the point of view of a woman in her thirties to which if this was the 19th century would be considered a spinster.
