July 06, 2004Brown's brewing possible identity theftDuring last evening's perpetual room cleaning I was throwing out old receipts and for some unknown reason I stared down at a Brown's receipt and wondered which digits of my card did they show. It turns out they printed the entire card number on the receipt; but not only that, they also printed out the expiration number and my full name as it appears on the card. I was completely shocked and dismayed that my entire bank account could be annihilated should I have been neglectful and tossed out the receipt or simply dropped it. The Pump Station wasn't as big of an offender of the disclosure of account information, however, they did print the card number. Call it paranoia but I like to keep all of my account info to myself and cut/burn the receipts. Consider this a warning to all you plastic savvy diners. 01:37 PM
CommentsAlways good to know! Dianne and I almost always use plastic, and we try to be vigilant about our receipts, and we shred (with our fancy, schmancy cross cut shredder) any receipts that show the entire credit card #. Although I never thought of burning, and that would be just as easy. Just throw the receipt in the ash tray and light that baby up! - Carrie P.S. I think I just got way to excited about that whole fire thing! Posted by: Carrie at July 7, 2004 01:14 PM you might bring that to their attention......that can't be ethical Posted by: Groundzero at July 8, 2004 10:56 AM yeah, I hate it when they do that, I usually do my own manual crosscut shredding which involves making fringe one way over the important parts and cutting it into, quite literally, dust. very paranoid. :) Posted by: texasyankee at July 13, 2004 01:09 PM Post a comment
