September 23, 2003Smoking FascistsI heard about this yesterday, I read an article in the NY Post but figured, “hey it’s the Post how true can it be?” Today Kris forwards me an article from Cybercast News about the same topic. Now it has gone a bit too far, legislation wants to ban smoking in private cars and will do so if they get to pass some bills currently in the queue. From the CNSNews.com article: However, lawmakers claim the intent is to protect children by getting businesses to cut down on pollution.” From the NY Post article: I can understand the litter issue; I am even guilty of discarding my one or two butts out of the window whilst driving. As for the children on board aspect, are the police really going to enforce this law and how easy will it be for a person with no children smoking their legally purchased cigarettes to be pulled over by some cop and have to deal with the hassle of wasting time as the cop realizes there are no children. I feel it is the parent’s responsibility to be intelligent about not smoking around their children. I am conscientious about not smoking around our cats because they don’t like cigarette smoke so why should anyone in the apartment subject them to it? The article is right though, it’s just another step to finally eliminating the smoker’s right to imbibe in their vice. Just like they say in quitting, gradual steps, but they’re taking gradual steps to prohibiting the right to enjoy a product. For those interested in reading the actual legislation here are the links: A00738 - "Prohibiting smoking on public beaches and in public parks." A02765 - "Prohibits smoking in dormitories and other residential facilities of public and private colleges and universities." A02766 - "Strengthens provisions restricting smoking in workplaces, requiring a separate smoking break room, provided there are sufficient accommodations for nonsmokers" A02767 - "Prohibits smoking in bowling establishments, except bar and food service areas, requiring separate ventilation and negative pressurization; repealer" 12:41 PM
CommentsI am so tired of this! The current ban isn't enough? I don't understand how alcohol can remain legal with the documented thousands of people that are killed by people under the influence of alcohol, and yet cigarettes are being legislated to death by the spectre of secondhand smoke, the longterm effects of which are unproven! As for the no smoking in cars with children, will that be considered child abuse? If you are found guilty of doing it, could you have your children taken away? And now apparently second hand smoke is dangerous in open air! I'd like to see the health reports on that. This is becoming more and more ridiculous. I may have to move to a more tobacco-friendly state after all. Posted by: patd at September 23, 2003 02:27 PM The lawmakers in NYS need to be removed and a recall election needs to take place. THis is bullshit. BULLSHIT. what's next? Salt being banned? Anything bad for you? Fucking A-red meat will be banned at some point too. FUCK THOSE ASSMUNCHING LAWMAKERS. Posted by: GZ at September 23, 2003 05:00 PM The piece i have in tomorrow's Metroland has to do with the contradicting polls used by each side of the issue. Interesting stuff, as the anti-smoking lobby has a poll that indicates 70% of New yorkers support the law and see no reason for change, while the Conservative Party has a poll stating that 70% of New Yorker sbelieve the law should be amended. After talking on the phone with the anti-smoking crew for a bit (the Conservatives didn't return my calls), and looking through the full version of each poll, it's amazing how wording and such can get you the results you want from a survey. Posted by: rm at September 24, 2003 03:20 PM well, I think it's all shite. I'll be damned if I let some politician poke around my vehicle that I bought and paid for with MY own money. I don't smoke anymore, but I'll be damned if someone tells me I can't do it in my own damned car. Posted by: texasyankee at September 24, 2003 10:06 PM on a totally unrelated note, there's an article in Salon today about Neil Gaiman. If you like, I can fwd you the text. (I have a co-worker who subs.) Posted by: gg at September 25, 2003 11:37 AM Post a comment
